We played the advance rules, which was the first time with those for all of us.
This session of Beowulf, ShaunB decided to collect as many cards as possible, to be able to outbid other players for what he needed. I decided to collect fame and alliance tokens as much as possible, with the theory that I'll get enough fame to overcome any hardships. I tried hard to outbid everyone at the first auction, but my strategy left me straggling for most of the rest of the game for lack of cards.
I'm not sure how ShuanG and Andy fell behind, because, in the end, ShaunB and I were in the lead, with ShaunB pulling out the victory.
Game lasted 84 minutes.

Two new gamers, Nil and Carol, joined the group while Beowulf was being played. They played a quick learning game while we finished our game.
Unfortunately, Nil couldn't stay long, and left as Beowulf finished up.
So, the rest of us played the game.
The game swung wildly, as we played. ShaunG collected a lot of cards each round, and threatened to end the game by reaching 75 points, though, not much on purpose. His score was fairly steady from hand to hand.
Andy was the one who scored a lot towards the beginning, but was able to avoid taking most cards towards the end.

I tried to jump to the most advantageous space, skipping as many spaces as possible.
Andy ran into some hard luck, and couldn't get the pieces he needed. He spent his experience to move to advantageous spaces instead.
There's not much to say about this game, with players making the most of the hands of cards they drew. ShaunG seemed to play conservatively, trying to maximize amulet pieces acquired each turn. He saved enough experience cards in the end to grab the piece he needed for the win.

One thing that impresses me is when people get Liar's Dice right off the bat. I don't know if it's the coaching that did it, or if Carol has a natural sense of the game, but she did deliberate her turn well.
We played two games of Liar's Dice.
The first game, it was down to one die for each of Carol and ShaunG. It was a close battle, whittling each other down, but she bluffed ShaunG for the win.
Was it luck, or did we just play a less forgiving game. Andy showed his prowess at bidding, perhaps from all those poker games, for the win for the second game.

We finished off the evening with Electronic Catch Phrase.
As usual, it was a blast. It was addicting. Our play generated lots of laughs, especially when any player got stuck on the clues.
This is the newer version of the game, and I could swear the timer is faster than on the older one. At least it looks slicker and has better buttons and displays the score.
Carol was going to leave after one game but really got into playing more and more games. She even got punchy with her own table talk, which just shows how the game really gets people relaxed and into the fun.
